New York 06-11

The following are the oldest photos I have backed up on a hard drive. Photos of New York City taken between the years 2006-2011. I grew up in a small suburb of Hartford Connecticut, where the biggest attractions were a Blockbuster Video and a Dairy Queen that was open seasonally. For a teenager it was the least interesting place on earth, but for $18.50 you could take the Metro North train from New Haven to Grand Central. I would take these trips semi-regularly and walk around all day, surviving on pizza and spending as little money as possible.

New York is one of the most photographed cities in the world and many photographers are drawn to NYC for street photography; capturing chance encounters in public spaces. Reflecting on my photography, much of it, even when photographing cities is in the style of a landscape with an absence of people. While some people prefer chaos, I prefer finding quiet places, even when I’m an urban setting. I’m drawn to grand scenes with grand scenery such as mountains or skyscrapers. It makes you feel small and the perspective of landscape photography captures that well.
